Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fourth grade classroom in Ohio is comprised of approximately forty-two amazing students, many of whom come from bilingual households and receive free breakfast and lunch.
It is important to me they are afforded a classroom environment which promotes learning and well-being.
The learning environment that I hope to create for my students is one that inspires them to succeed and supports them every step of the way. My fourth grade students come to school each day, often times bringing their home lives with them. I spend a great deal of time throughout the year, creating a strong sense of classroom community. My students not only rely on me to support them in their learning and serve as a positive role model in their lives, but they have come to rely on one another through the positive relationships they have formed.
My Project
A brain break is a short period of time when we change up the dull routine of incoming information that arrives via predictable, tedious, well-worn roadways. My students will benefit from the Circle Time Songs & Games because the music and movement action will help calm them down and get them ready for learning. Singing a song will revitalize their brains. Through lively games of Guess Who, Buzzword Junior and others, my students will use vocabulary and structures, repeatedly gaining much-needed practice.
Games allow students to quickly engage and transition back to the content we were working on.
Fun, silly or interesting moments tend to stand out in students’ memories, and they latch on to the vocabulary/structures we are studying. A positive emotional connection can facilitate learning. After hours of state-mandated standardized tests, I find my students are often tired of sitting and full of energy; an energetic game with lots of movement may be just what they need.
