My students need sturdy boxes to keep their literacy materials in--books, folders, and journals.

My Students

CAUTION: READERS AT WORK! Our class has worked very hard this year practicing our independent literacy skills, but our "construction zone" needs some organizing.

We are a group of 23 five-and-six year old kindergartners.

We are active, motivated learners who come from a variety of backgrounds. Our school is a student-focused environment, where teachers and kids work hard to help one another learn. Our demographics are of high poverty.

My Project

Our current literacy boxes look like this: Magazine-sized "bankers boxes" that have been previously used by former classes. They are white, but over time have turned to a shade of ivory (from so much use). Some boxes have tape to hold them together. The most fascinating part is what is inside... Baggies full of high-interest books, journals filled with beginning sentences and stories which kids share their thoughts in, and folders with letter sounds and high-frequency words in them to help support these early learners. If only the boxes were sturdy enough to keep the materials in. Each student uses his/her box approximately 10 times a day... Imagine reaching in to a clean, new, colorful, organized literacy box every day that many times!

Since implementing a new literacy model in our classroom, our active group of kiddos has learned how to work independently!

They are excited about reading, motivated to work by themselves and with others quietly, and know how important it is to be a reader and writer. Your donation to our classroom will help our students learn the importance of organization and the importance of literacy!
