Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a 4th-8th grade charter school in Milwaukee. Our school has over 800 students of which 96% are receiving free or reduced-price lunch. I have a high number of English Language Learners in my classroom.
Within my Project Lead the Way class, I teach all 5th and 6th grade students and have an elective class for 7th and 8th graders.
Project Lead the Way is a project-based curriculum that allows students to explore math and science in a different way than their regular classroom. Students are faced with real-world problems which they are expected to work collaboratively to solve. The class also allows them to be creative by using the engineering design process.
My Project
In my engineering classroom, I often give my students fun challenges to complete to keep their excitement for STEM going. With supplies like Legos, Magaformers, and other everyday materials like straws and pipe cleaners, my students can use their imagination to build and create. By pairing STEM challenges with literacy, I am able to help improve students' vocabulary and reinforce growth mindset in my classroom.
Picture books are an excellent way to grow students' love of reading while instilling them with important messages.
I plan to corporate more literacy in my classroom and pair them with STEM challenges that allow students to be creative and innovative in a new way. Each book connects to an activity that allows students to work together to solve a problem.
With these materials, my students will continue to develop creative ideas and the idea that there is no wrong answer to a problem if you continue to work hard.
