My students need high-interest sports books that hook them into reading, as well as a shelving in our "equipment" room to store these books.

My Students

Seven out of 10 of my students are on free or reduced lunch and face daily life challenges. Our county ranks as one of the top 10 Indiana counties for unemployment rates with residents earning the 5th lowest per capita income.

Literacy is my students' ticket to life success!

Our county is well below the state average in adults over the age of 25 having earned a diploma and only 13% of county residents have a bachelor’s degree or higher.

My Project

Many young children take to reading with eagerness, devouring each new tale of Junie B. Jones or Percy Jackson. Some children though, for a variety of reasons, are simply reluctant to pick up a book. For many of these children, I believe they just have not been exposed to right book yet for them - the one book or type of book that hooks them into the world of reading and everything wonderful that comes with it. The prominence of sports in schools and society is undeniable, and sports provide countless possibilities for engaging students in literacy.

High-interest sports books will be hooks for many students, particularly boys, into the wonderful world of reading.

I want to spark students’ interests by filling our school literacy “equipment” room with 6-packs of high interest, leveled sports book sets that we will use in our Title I K-2 literacy groups and literature circles, as well as with individual students and classroom collaborations. I also want to provide adequate shelving in our "equipment" room to store the multitude of sports-related books that the students will have access to.

The lower-leveled sports books will serve as an entry point into literature. Another literacy milestone that is often difficult for students is the transition to longer chapter books. High-interest, shorter sports chapter books will serve as the entry point into chapter books and more comprehension-based literature circles, leading to an easier and more successful transfer to higher-levels of chapter books and literacy acquisition.
