My Students

My students are five- and six years of age. When I look back, I remember a lot of playing when I was in kindergarten, but now as a teacher, I realize it wasn't just play, it was learning.

My students crave hands-on activities and choice.

They learn important academic and social skills through interaction with each other and tools in the classroom. They love a good challenge! As the year goes on, I discover students focusing more on practicing skills, such as reading or writing during their free time, as opposed to imaginative play. Having the resources in the classroom for them to help continue to push their passion for learning makes me really grateful.

My Project

At the kindergarten level, a lot of students come in knowing quite a few letters, and even some letter sounds; however, it is very rare for students to be able to read at the beginning of the year. If they can read, students are reading simple one or two line texts.

To help students enjoy picture books while they are at independent reading stations, I have many books on CD; however, I have no working CD players!

We learn to teach students at a level that is appropriate to their development. When students reach the frustration level, they learn to give up, and begin to dislike school. That is something I obviously want to avoid!

Because there are minds that don't develop as quickly as others, I need to find activities to keep students engaged and excited about reading. Books on CD are a perfect way to allow students to be independent, while still practicing holding a book and learning about story development.
