My Students

My 6th grade students bring so much to our classroom every day: They are athletes, comedians, scholars, musicians, artists, technology whizzes and world travelers. They bring their uniqueness to our classroom and everyone has their place within our decorated classroom walls. I am a general education teacher in a large, urban school district in the San Francisco Bay Area. My students are eager to learn and they are encouraged to be independent and self-reliant learners.

What I love most about being a 6th grade teacher is when we come together to discuss ideas and solutions to problems, they often surprise me with their ingenuity and maturity level.

I strive to build a strong sense of community with my students. We meet regularly in a circle on the rug in order to have classroom meetings where everyone has a voice and has an opportunity to contribute. My students and I especially love read aloud time where I read to them a good story or current event article. Their insightful contributions to the ensuing discussion is truly the best part of my day!

My Project

My students are avid, independent readers. Some of them, however, will benefit from listening to good books being read to them on cd, while they follow along in their print books.

I have a good number of English language learners who, although capable and bright, cannot yet access books at their grade level reading.

I don't want this to be a reason why they don't read. There are so many wonderful stories they can listen to, and in time, they will begin to acquire stronger language skills to be able to read them on their own.

This collection of books and audio books, will enhance our classroom book library and give students who are reading below grade level a way to enjoy and contribute to their literature book clubs.
