We live in the heart of an Indian Reservation in MT. Over 75% of my school population receives free and reduced-price lunches and is of native descent. Many of my students come from homes that are economically challenged. My students have challenges at home, but our school provides a safe place with many long-term teachers who live in their community. The teachers here know the kids, know their parents, and know the situations so everyone can work together to create the best learning environments to suit our students.
My Project
The students in my district often come from homes of poverty and dysfunction. Many of them do not have books at home and haven't been read to as small children. Hearing language spoken and read to them can significantly impact their language and reading development. By incorporating a listening center in the kindergarten classrooms, we can reinforce some of the language and vocabulary they missed when they were younger and help them become better readers. This project will give two classrooms a cd player, headphones, and many books with cds for students to use every day to supplement their reading instruction.
