This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
It's the year 2012 and in order for my students to listen to books, they are using tapes, rather than MP3s. They spend the majority of their listening to reading time trying to figure out which side of the tape to play, and troubleshooting the few cheap tape players we have in our classroom.
My students are a lively class of 31 first graders.
Thirteen out of 31 of my students are learning English and speak another language at home. My students love to read and love learning how to read! For many, time to read or listen to their favorite book is the best part of their day.
My Project
Our classroom has many exciting books on tape and on CD. If these books were on MP3 players, my students could easily listen to these books. They also will not have to worry about the tapes which get worn out, or have to troubleshoot the tape players they currently use. iPod Shuffles will allow for a number of different books on one player so the students can easily switch form one book to the next. New, sturdy headphones with volume control will stand up with lots of use, and will cancel out other classroom noise.
Since many of my students are learning English, listening to reading is an important activity for them.
Listening to reading helps them develop language intuition and helps them learn new vocabulary as they follow along with the books. Plus, listening to reading is fun for all students! They love to listen to the books come alive. It allows them to build their fluency and vocabulary, and allows me to pull small groups of students while the rest of the class is engaged in a meaningful activity.
