My Students

In 2013 I retired from the big local school district I had worked at for 26 years. I became a first grade teacher in a charter school. Our school is a really good STEM school. After working here 1 year I was able to create a niche for myself as a Reading Specialist. We are rocking it.

My students are often second language learners struggling in the classroom with their reading.

I work with their families and siblings to support them in phonics, vocabulary, sight word recognition, choosing the right book and progressing in their comprehension. We use the i-Ready program and Accelerated Reader. Much of the time in my classroom is spent on the computer in small pull-out groups.

My Project

We ask our students to bring their own headphones from home but many of my students a can't afford good headphones. Earbuds are good for listening to your personal music but over the ear headphones are better for learning in school. Some early readers need to make the sounds of the letters and read the words out loud. The better the headphones the less the students are disturbed by other readers. That's why I like to have some quality headphones on hand in my room.

There are 3 other teachers in the school that run the math portion of our RTI program.

RTI is Response to Instruction. The math teachers use the headphones from my room for their programs too. I love to be able to share.
