My Students

My school is an urban public middle school in California. Along with a diverse middle school population, we also have a specialized program to meet the needs of recently arrived immigrant and refugee students. Our Newcomer Program serves students from around the world. We have recently added a 9th grade year to serve as a bridge between middle and high school for our newcomer students. Our students become active participants in our community, while learning in small groups, through hands-on activities, interdisciplinary projects, and collaboration.

We aim to design high-interest curriculum that engages and inspires our students and creates a positive classroom and school community, all while improving their English and academic skills.

My Project

A high quality speaker will allow me to supplement my English class for newcomer students with engaging presentations and videos that will meet my students' diverse needs. We often watch news stories and educational videos online, but I don't have a quality speaker that is reliable or loud enough for the whole class to hear. The speaker I requested will allow audio to be played so the entire class can hear English in authentic formats, such as news stories, documentaries, and interviews. It's essential that English Learners practice listening to English, and this speaker will allow them to do this.

A high quality speaker will allow me to maximize the use of technology in our classroom.

As a teacher with students that don’t speak fluent English, I know that my students will benefit from the videos and presentations that will be heard using this speaker. This speaker will allow my students have have improved access to highly engaging instruction.
