Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach first grade in a low socioeconomic school. We were hit by Hurricane Harvey last year. It was a shocking event and a difficult challenge for my students. Their lives were changed drastically from one day to the next and had no idea how to cope. Many students had it more difficult than others. These students have had hard living situations that no child should never experience. This devastating event left some students coming to school without some of their basic needs being met at home such as eating their daily meals, shelter, feeling safe, and having clean clothes. They come to school to fulfill their basic needs. With all of these challenges, they still make the best of it.
My students are still trying to recover from this catastrophe.
They come to school eager to learn and to discover new adventures.
My Project
My first grade students would love to have a listening center because the one we have is outdated and has many malfunctions. Our class has a portable tape/CD player that the CD player does not work. This makes it hard to listen to most books that are on CDs. My students will be ecstatic to have a portable CD players that they can use on their own. They like to be independent and have responsibilities. The potable CD player is very children friendly to use. My class will be excited to listen to books they love such as Dr. Seuss, Tacky the Penguin, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and many more of their favorites.
A listening center is great center for students to build their confidence in their reading.
My class will not only be listening to stories they love for pleasure, but also it is a great way to model how a fluent reader reads. Listening Center also teaches other reading skills but in a way that makes students feel reading is fun!
