Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our low-income/high poverty school district, the students in my class are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and all of them receive free breakfast and lunch based on their household family incomes. To combat the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with opportunities to engage in creative and meaningful learning experiences.
The class I have this year is smaller in size but are in a greater need of support.
Although the class is a mixture of second graders, third graders, and fourth graders, they are faced with more challenges than their typical peers. I have students in my class who have not only severe learning delays but also emotional and behavioral issues. I want to make my classroom environment warm and inviting to help my students not only feel comfortable but to help them become engaged and active learners.
My Project
My students would benefit from a mobile listening center because when students are listening to stories being read aloud they are able tp develop critical comprehension skills. For this project, I am requesting a portable CD listening center with headphones. Since space is limited in my small classroom, I have also requested a mobile cart to store the CD player, headphones, and book sets on.
My students have IEPs and are struggling readers who all read two to three grade levels behind their typical peers.
Despite their difficulties with reading, they are all excited when they are able to take a book from the classroom library and they love to be read to! Many are not read to at home, either because they have no books at home or their parents have their own struggles with reading. I have a couple of students whose parents are only able to speak and read in Spanish so therefore the only time they have stories read to them in English is in school. With a listening center, students will have the benefit of having a story read to them while I work with other students during small group time. The listening center would be a station in our guided reading rotation.
