Help my struggling readers feel successful as they read along to audio books on Ipod Shuffles!

I teach in a classroom of highly curious and energetic second graders located in a high poverty suburb.

The students in my classroom are interested in a wide variety of subjects and love to read and learn. They enter the classroom doors eager to share what they are reading with the class as we launch Reader's Workshop every day. Second grade is the first time students in our district are given a reading assessment to determine their reading level. The range of student reading levels make it of the utmost importance for me to use every tool I have available to meet their needs.

My Project

Imagine a classroom of students reading during independent reading time. A few children lay across Pillow Pets on the floor, some are curled up on the couch, while others kick back in a camping chair. Now focus your attention to the struggling reader - the reader who flips through the pages aimlessly trying to decipher meaning from the text. Decoding words can become so tiresome that some students want to give up and begin to dislike reading. I've noticed that after our reading assessment, struggling readers are left with few choices of books that are appropriate to their level. My goal is to support these students with audio books. Students will have the option to choose one to read along with on Ipod Shuffles so they too, can read around the room. Audio books encourage students to build their fluency and give them the confidence they need to feel successful as readers. After listening to the story repeatedly students begin to pick up on sight words and commit them to memory.

This project will make a difference in my classroom with readers who struggle with their reading identity.

Repeated listening to an audio book will build student self-confidence and rebuild their love of reading. As a primary grade teacher, I feel it is my duty to instill in my students that they are smart, successful, independent children.
