My class is located at an inner-city school in York, Pa. We are a high poverty district with 100% of our students receiving free lunches. Most of our students are from single parent homes or are being raised by other family members. Many of our students are also considered homeless.
My class loves to learn, even though we are limited with the availability of adequate materials.
Many of the materials that are in my classroom have been purchased using my own personal funds. With the increasing demands of technology, I am limited to the amount I can purchase on my own.
My Project
During our center time, students utilize technology while on SumDog Math, Successmaker, Epic, ABC Mouse, or Teach your Monster to Read. When students are on the computers, they need to concentrate and listen to the lessons and book to answer comprehension questions and problem solve. In a class of 17 students, it can be hard to concentrate with the other productive noise that is going one. My students also need headphones to attend the listening center to listen to books on CDs.
These headphones will allow my poverty stricken students to use the technology we have to enhance their reading and math skills.
