My students love to listen to reading on the Kindle Fires in our classroom. We are learning to read with expression and build our fluency rates. Listening to reading helps students tune in to what fluent readers sound like.
My third graders are active and energetic about learning.
They are interested in exploring everything around them and ask good thoughtful questions. Our school is mostly made up of second language learners who are new to speaking and figuring out how to pronounce words correctly.
My Project
I am requesting 4 new headphones and 2 kindle cases for our Daily 5 listening centers.
My students will use the headphones and cases to listen to audiobooks on the Kindles in the classroom. Students rotate through 5 centers that focus on reading skills. One of them is listen to reading through the audiobooks and websites online to listen to fluent readers. Having students use headphones allows other students in the classroom to not be distracted by noise so they can work on other areas of reading during our center time.
The headphones and cases will allow my students to sit around the classroom and focus on the reading strategy of fluency to become better readers.
When students focus on a skill, they can process the information better. We sometimes forget to allow students to listen to good models of fluent readers so they know what to strive for themselves. Listening to an expressive and exciting story can make all the difference in becoming a fluent reader instead of an average reader.
