This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I was little, I loved to listen to stories read by my parents. Many of my students, unfortunately, are missing the enjoyment of being read to probably because of one or many different family circumstances.

My students are only six years old.

They are in first grade and are still learning to read. They show lots of interest in stories but still have difficulties reading the books themselves. Unfortunately, our school still has limited funding to purchase proper supplies and equipment for the current six-year-old listening center.

My Project

The main purpose of my project is to improve my students’ reading skills. I believe that the listening center is very important for this project. It not only helps these little children appreciate reading more but also helps them become better readers. As they listen along to the tapes, they show much improvement in word recognition. Also by listening to the reader, they learn to read with intonation. The listening center is one of my students' favorite places to visit when they complete their assignments. Finally, I have noticed that my students become better readers by listening to the stories on tapes.

Recently my students have missed the opportunities to visit the listening center due to the poor condition of the equipment and the lack of interesting stories on tapes.

Donations to this request will keep our listening center alive and strengthen the students’ reading skills. Your help will be greatly appreciated by these little minds.
