My students need a listening center to learn what reading fluently sounds like. Students need a variety of nonfiction and fiction texts to practice their reading skills.
Of the 19 in my class, one came to me reading “at grade level,” As of now, that number has risen to 7! These kids love to learn and strive to do their best!
Our school district currently offers 100% of K-8 students free lunch due to our poverty level.
Within that district, I teach at the poorest school. We service three homeless shelters and are in the poorer end of town. My students strive to succeed and learn. I am always finding to new experiences for them; art appreciation, listening to classical music, theatre trips, new books about places different than their own, etc. These students deserve the world, so I really try to show it to them!
My Project
Students in my class aren't always exposed to a range of books at home. Students need to be read to from an early age but my students aren't always afforded that opportunity. This is where the listening center comes in!
Students can hear someone read meaningful fiction and nonfiction texts fluently.
When students hear these texts read by a fluent reader, they better understand what fluency sounds like. Varied listening experiences from a variety of authors and readers, will form well rounded, fluent readers.
Listening centers take out the "hard part" of reading. Students can better understand and comprehend the book when someone else reads to them.
