Unfortunately, when we assembled the wearables with the micro:bits there was design flaw in the wearables that caused them to all break. I was able to send them back and order small micro:bit controlled robots. I was also able to 3D print alternative micro:bit wearables, so the students were able to complete the original project.\r\n\r\nThe students loved moving beyond creating a block based code, to applying their coding skills to a real world hardware object. They created a code to make their micro:bits count their steps. They estimated how many steps they would take on a walk around the school. Then, they tested their step counter by taking the walk. Finally, they compared the data collected with their estimates. They had smiles on their faces the whole time they were completing this project.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping inspire the next generation of STEM leaders. All 75 kindergarten students participated in center rotations such as building their own rollercoaster track, shooting straw rockets and creating floating boats. Thank you for helping enrich the education of all of these kindergartners.\r\n\r\nAs a bonus, I have been able to use the materials in my new role this year as the elementary digital literacy teacher for the entire district. I am incorporating STEM principles into all of my lessons. During a lesson on the engineering design process, the younger students created a stool for Baby Bear after Goldilocks broke his. The students developed empathy while creating their stools. The older students worked together to develop marble runs that would work against gravity and move the marble as slowly as possible.
