My Students

We are a special day class, and it is a challenge reaching each of their special needs. My goal is to have them each reach their full potential. We like to sing and listen to stories, but for many of my students with autism this noise level is overwhelming.

We are a TK-2 special day class housed in a general education public school.

My students range in abilities. We have 13 students ranging from non-verbal to reading a year behind grade level. Many of our students have autism, or seizure disorders. We are a self-contained class, but we do integrate with the general education classes in the afternoon.

My Project

Loud noises or too much activity can over stimulate many of my students. Right now, we try to calm them by taking them to a quite place in another part of the room; which, it is not that big of a room. We are really only removing them from the activity not necessarily the noise. We would like to be able to calm them with music and headphones. Also, we have many teaching songs and books on cd, but some of my students can't enjoy them or learn when they are being taught to the whole class, because they are trying to block out the noise. A listening center would allow them to learn these songs and listen to the books in a quiet, calm, and secure manner. We could also use the listening center to foster reading skills in my emergent readers. Several of them do not get read to at home, and this would be a wonderful way for them to be read to on a individual basis.

A listening center would greatly improve the learning for all my students.

It would provide a quiet place for those that need calming, and also a learning center where students can listen to books that are teaching phonics, shapes, colors, etc. It will also help to foster a sense of independence as they pick out the story and get to listen to a story of their choosing at their leisure time or in a learning center.
