Listening Center for Building Fluency in Kindergarten!
My students need a listening station. The boys and girls love to listen to stories on tape which helps them build reading fluency and learn to read with expression!
Save our love of reading! My kindergarten students love to listen to stories on tape or CD, but we have an outdated system that is extremely difficult for them to use! Many features do not work properly and my young students are getting frustrated with the equipment.
I am a kindergarten teacher in a rural elementary school in Indiana!
The boys and girls in my class all enter kindergarten so eager to learn. I want kindergarten to set the tone for the rest of their school career. Several students come to me with preschool backgrounds and are very prepared for school and others arrive with little or no academic background.
Kindergarten should be a place students look forward to coming to each day! My classroom is filled with lots of great activities that not only make learning fun, but help each student to continually build on their knowledge at whatever level they are at. My students come to me with a wide range of knowledge and it is my job to keep expanding their minds each day!
My Project
Each morning during our reading block I pull my students into small groups according to their reading level to focus on the skills that each child needs to grow. While I am doing this I have literacy stations set up around my room.
I would love to have a full time listening center that the kids could use on their own. Currently, when I do use this center I am constantly being pulled away from my groups to help the students to use it. It is very complicated and does not always work the way it supposed to. Another problem that we have is that the headphones are not always working properly.
Our listening center is housed in a crate with the radio on an empty desk above the crate. This is not exactly convenient because the kids have to be careful not to accidentally pull the headphones which may lead to the radio being pulled off the table. The headphones when working properly have cords that are continuously tangled which leads to more problems. We desperately need an new system that is kid friendly and organized!
Listening stations are great teaching tools to help beginning readers hear how fluent readers read and to learn how the vocal tone and expression can make a story come to life.
This is such a great teaching tool that my boys and girls need and would LOVE! Please help us!
