So many of my first grade ELL students are not only dealing with deficits in language and literacy skills that place them at least two years behind their native-speaking peers, but approximately 15% of our ELL students struggle with special needs and cognitive disabilities that make learning even more challenging. They often lack experiences, vocabulary, and access to books and technology. However, despite their disadvantages, they love to learn and read! I am inspired by the resilience and work ethic of my students but am often discouraged by my lack of ability to provide materials that research has proven can expedite the process of learning English in a way that is non-threatening and enjoyable. Fostering in my students the love of reading is a goal I hope to reach.
My Project
A very important part of learning to read is through listening to books. Listening to books in the listening center allows for all the students to follow along with the words. We are in desperate need of books on CDs of different genres. Our current books have been very loved but are now outdated and damaged.
My first-grade students are required to read in class every day.
After they’ve read, they are required to respond to what they read. The listening center is so engaging for students and allows them to enjoy literature and texts they would otherwise be unable to read. It allows them to respond to what they’ve read, make predictions, describe characters and their feelings, discuss plots and main ideas, etc. Anytime we as educators can inspire students to read should be considered a huge victory!
