Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We love reading. Whenever we can we join together at the rug to enjoy a story. My class is made up of mostly English Language Learners (ELLs). This means that they, more than ever, need these wonderful opportunities to hear good stories read aloud to them. I wish there were more time in the day!
My students are like little sponges.
They love learning new things and because 15 out of the 18 of them are learning English as a new language, they love hearing stories rich with new vocabulary that builds up their own language development.
My school is very diverse. It is made up of 60% of families that would be considered living within poverty. The majority of them receive free and reduced lunch. They are struggling immigrants who love their children and want the best for their children.
My Project
We recently received a listening center from Donors Choose and the children use it daily. They enjoy listening to the stories over and over again and talking about their favorite parts. We simply need more books! I think that bringing in this particular new set of Read-Alongs will excite my students. The themes are familiar to them, as they fulfill our social studies curriculum. Yet, they have fun and relatable story lines.
My students need as many opportunities as possible to hear good stories read aloud.
They are behind English speaking students in that they have not heard so many stories we all take for granted in knowing by the age of 5. Fairy tales, folk tales, nursery rhymes...these are all foreign to my ELL students, but so necessary to their literacy development.
Adding these stories to my classroom will improve my students' literacy development and build their vocabulary without them even realizing it!
