Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students in the functional skills program range in age from 14-22 and present with a diagnosed intellectual disabilities similar to moderate cognitive impairments. They travel to and from high school with door to door transportation; due to their cognitive limitations, and the dangerous risks involved in traveling across the city via public transportation.
We aspire to teach our students the necessary adaptive life skills to be happy, successful, and contributing members of society.
They become "employees" in the school run Copy Center. They work recycling within the school. We are located close in proximity to a local hospital where they work as greeters.
Academically, it is vital for our students to gain the knowledge needed to be successful active members in society. They need to be able to access public transportation, make the appropriate change at a store, and to request help or clarification. Ideally, it would be wonderful if they could access the digital world in areas other than social media.
My Project
Throughout our school day, there are opportunities for students to use technology in the classroom. Currently, students have access to Chromebooks and tablets. With this technology, there comes the challenge of students needing privacy and focus to work successfully with particular apps and programs.
With this project, I hope to increase the availability of comfortable, functional headphones for our technology block.
Students will feel more comfortable reading aloud, speaking, and simply working with access to this tool. Headphones will also provide a needed barrier for students with attention and focus difficulties.
Adding headphones to our classroom would be a simple and welcome addition to our technology closet.
