In our school we have four full Kindergarten classrooms. My amazing kindergarten students are growing up on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Western Montana. Every child in our district receives free breakfast and lunch to provide opportunity for them to learn without grumbling tummies. It is a joy to watch my littles fall in love with learning and books, as this is the first exposure to education for many of them. My heart melts when they offer an exuberant hug. "Teacher," they exclaim, "I love school, and I love our classroom! It is my favorite place." No matter what, school should be a safe place for them to flourish.
There are many challenges to learning, but we encourage ourselves daily with our special words: "I am kind; I am strong; I am brave; I am smart!"
My littles are learning more ways to look at the world with wonder: exploring cultures, becoming inquisitive scientists, and practicing kindness. With their bright smiles and helping hands my students are eager to overcome new challenges. As their teacher, my goal is to ensure there are as many resources, projects, books, and games available as possible to continue making learning a delight.
My Project
Our fabulous Kindergarten team cares for over 80 students during the school day. We have been gifted a team cart of laptops so we can teach our students technology skills and responsibility as well as complete testing, do STEM projects, and access extra resources for use with math and reading centers. During math and reading time, having technology access allows students to use resources such as Happy Numbers (which was just funded for our Kindergarten classrooms -- yay!) and read-aloud literacy sites or typing practice that tailor to our students' individual pace and level.
Little learners are easily distracted by other noise, so we need headphones to do our best learning with technology!
Most families were not able to provide individual headphones for their children, but we want to give equal access to each of our young students. Added privacy of headphones means that every child can focus on his or her own projects without interruption. Learners needing a challenge can work rapidly, and students needing extra supports can take their time without embarrassment. The more individualized we can make our classrooms, the more our students will thrive academically. Headphones will make us ready for full-access, worry-free learning for all our students (with the bonus of easy cleaning and storage by small hands!).
Thank you for helping our wonderful Kindergarten students listen alone and become responsible technology users!
