Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are wonderful first graders who are eager to learn. My school district is urban and very high poverty. My children come from broken homes, the foster care system and some have lived in shelters. The schools provides free breakfast and lunch for 100% of the students. For my students, school is something they look forward to. Despite whatever is going on at home, they know school is safe and they enjoy learning new things each day. Even when they are having a tough day, my students put in their best effort into the work we are doing. They are learning both academics and how to have appropriate social interactions with peers in my classroom. They all work hard every day to do a good job and make my classroom and the school the best it can be.
My students are like a family and work together to ensure our classroom is a safe and enjoyable work environment.
Our classroom community is great, but we are in a large city where our families need some extra opportunities.
My Project
My students are working on their skills as listeners, and writers to learn to their best ability and achieve success in school. First off we need pencils! Pencils are a super important tool in the classroom. Without pencils my students aren't able to effectively practice their writing skills from holding a pencil to explaining their thinking in math to writing paragraphs about a text they have read. Pencils get the most wear and tear in my classroom. They are dropped, lost, broken, and unfortunately stolen. We need to finish off the year strong with a supply that will be "first-grader proof."
On the topic of writing, we need materials to write on!
We need writing journals that have large lines as my students are still working on forming their letters correctly and writing sentences to match their pictures. A nice journal where all of their writing is in one place will show growth in writing as well as be a good tool to send home at the end of the year and for the students to continue to use throughout the summer. Handwriting books are also a must in my classroom! Many of my students are still struggling to form letters correctly and need reinforcement when writing letters and words. Handwriting books will help save paper from making copies off of the internet and it will allow the students to have all of the letters and numbers in one place. They can grab their book, work on one letter a day and it will help ease the transition into the reading block.
Finally, we need headphones, so all of my students can simultaneously be on computers and use programs such as iReady, Dreambox and ABCYA in order to enhance skills without having to turn off the sound during reading centers.
