My Students

I am a teacher of the best grade in the world...third grade! We have a pirate themed classroom filled with the best pirates in the West! We are "Exploring or Not, X Marks the Spot" our way through third grade!" We are leaders who plan on leading the world in a great direction someday!

Children at this age are eager to learn.

When we study a topic, they are sponges! They want to learn every possible fact. Library books, visited websites, and classroom conversations are always about our core; they get so engaged. By instilling a love of learning, I hope they become life long learners. I have such an amazing class! They are so diverse and bring lots of color to our room. We are a family. We really look out for one another. We have some special need students who require a lot of peer support. It warms my heart daily to see how supportive they are to each other.

My Project

For the first time in my teaching career, my classroom has Chromebooks for every student and a Listening Station where they can interact with books as they read. I have a few headphone sets that were handed down to me from a retiring teacher, so three lucky students get to use them each day as we work on our computers. The remainder of my class is forced to turn their volume down and lean in close so they can hear the instructions and information for online activities.

If each student had their own headphones, it would allow me to individualize lessons based on learning needs, and create a learning environment where children can move at their own pace.

This is particularly challenging when we work in school-mandated programs such as Core Lexia Reading and Reflex Math. Allowing each student to have a pair of headphones would give them the ability to utilize the programs through visual as well as audio means, the way the programs were designed. It would also allow me to incorporate individual learning opportunities for each student. I would be able to have students listen to books that teach cultural diversity, character education, and literacy. These headphones would be a great asset to my classroom and to each of my students.
