My Students

Our 130 energetic, hands-on, lovers of learning are lucky enough to be the second group of first graders to enter our beautiful school. Together we are creating a new community from the ground up, and we are ecstatic to infuse that community with a love for literature.

Our students are learning that the world is their ocean, and that a book can take them anywhere they would like to go!

At the beginning of first grade there is a wide range of reading level abilities. Some of our students are able to pick up great books and read for hours, others feel intimidated and anxious about reading on their own. Listening to quality literature is something that all students can engage in, despite their individual reading abilities. We want all our students to leave first grade with a love of all the places literature can them!

My Project

Read-alongs transform First Grade Common Core ELA Standards into an exciting, engaging, adventurous experience that students eagerly anticipate.

It is proven that read-alongs are adaptable to 100% of students regardless of their reading level.

For example, our lowest readers who are on a level A will be able to hear a book read on tape and see first hand how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way, while they are following along. It will also help them focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provide a model of fluent reading, which they desperately need.

Our highest readers will be able to use the read alongs as a tool to extend their comprehension and visualization skills. They will be challenged and enriched through learning activities that will go along with each story. They will develop a sense of narrative structure and understanding of language. All students in first grade will benefit from the rich and various ways in which language distills and conveys meaning. In addition, exposing them to a range of narrators and their different styles of reading will enhance their understanding of the reading and great literature.

This project will light up the minds of our students this year, and many more years to come!
