Listen Up... We Desperately Need New Books/Audio Books
My students need new audio books, like "Tikki Tikki Tembo" and "Frog & Toad Together," for our listening center, plus additional books, like those from the King Series.
Do you remember how frustrating it was when your audio cassette broke or the tape got tangled? Well, compound that frustration with the fact that most of my first graders have never even seen a cassette tape, and you will begin to understand how desperately we need to update our classroom technology.
My students attend a small town school with a high poverty rate.
I have a diverse group of students in my first grade class. The majority of students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds where working parents aren't able to find as much time as they would like to cultivate an interest in reading. Many enter my classroom barely meeting or below grade level.
My Project
The audio books will be used in a listening work station. These work stations are used while I focus individualized attention on small, leveled reading groups. Through the engaging illustrations and expressive narration, the students will gain encouragement to become independent and fluent readers.

I know that if I can foster an appreciation for reading in my first graders, they will do much better on their journey through the next twelve years of school.
