My Students

Even Kindergartners love technology and I want to provide my students with every opportunity I can to learn to read!

I teach Kindergarten in an economically disadvantaged school district that has historically offered full day Kindergarten.

Last year, we had to change to half day Kindergarten due to budget issues. I want to still be able to teach my students to read even though I have less time with them.

My Project

My goal is to utilize this half day in the most efficient way possible in order to teach my students to read. One way I see to do this is to make the students' center time more rigorous and as independent as possible because I am the only adult in the classroom. One way I feel that I can do this is to increase the education value at independent centers, in particular the listening center. I currently have a phonics kit that gives students practice in rhyming, beginning sounds, and blending. The problem is that it is on cassette tapes and some of the tapes are broken. Also, 5 years old often need assistance in starting the player and changing the tape. I have 25 students in each section of Kindergarten and when students need my assistance in the listening center or any center, it takes valuable time away from teaching reading groups.

What I would like for my students is this phonics kit or one like it on cd because cds are sturdier and the students are able to operate a cd player easier than a cassette player.

I also need a cd only player so there is no confusion for the students on how to use the player. I also picture in my mind a fun and relaxing atmosphere for them to look forward to.
