Listen to the Music (and Not the Distractions!)

My students need a listening center with CD player and a mobile storage unit so they can access the listening materials from a variety of areas in the classroom.

Too much noise! That is the statement that I am sure many of my students with Autism and Sensory Processing Disorder would use to describe their classroom. I teach in a integrated preschool classroom with 32 students on a military base. Our students come from a low-income, high risk community of the military family. Our three and four year old children experience the world of absent, deployed parents as a regular part of their life. We have been designated a Compassionate Site for our soldiers. As a result, we have an above average population of Special Needs children. In our preschool, we have 5 children diagnosed with Autism and/or Sensory Processing Disorder.

Our classroom is a busy place with 8 Special Needs and 8 typically developing students ages 3 and 4 in each of our sessions. Students need to be able to self-regulate themselves. When the typical activity and noise of the classroom prevents certain students from focusing on their work and activities, music and headphone help to filter extraneous noises. They also benefit from listening to the stories we base our literacy lessons on first using headphones. After they are familiar with the story by listening to it without auditory distraction, they are much more confident and able to participate in the circle discussions and activities related to the story.

Our classroom is in need of a listening center and storage unit to be used by our children with special needs. This listening center will provide students with a self-regulating strategy to help block out extraneous noise that will provide them the opportunity to focus on their work and activities without the normal distractions of the preschool classroom. The mobile storage unit will allow the students to access the listening center from a variety of areas in the classroom.

Your help will benefit students with Sensory Procession Disorder and students with Autism by helping them become self-directed when they learn how to access the listening center independently. By accessing the center to listen to literature prior to the large circle time, students will be not only familiar with the story, but confident participants in circle time activities and discussions.
