This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Please allow my students the opportunity to hear stories come to life! There is no better way to foster a love of reading and literature in young learners, than by reading to them. Students are inspired by the stories they hear and motivated to read when they have access to amazing literature.

I work with some of the best kids around!

They are intelligent, compassionate, and hopeful for a bright future. They also ALL come from low-income and socially disadvantaged backgrounds. My school is on a 100% free and reduced lunch program and 99% of my students are English-language learners. My students need as many opportunities as possible to improve their English and reading skills. This project will allow for daily practice of these skills, and foster a love a literature.

My Project

In my 16 years working with children, I have learned that one of the best ways to improve language skills and build reading fluency is to expose students to rich literature. One of the best ways to afford students with this opportunity is to give them as many opportunities as possible to LISTEN to books. Struggling readers begin to feel more confident in themselves when they can successfully "read along" with a story. The use of individual listening centers will allow students to listen to books at their own level. My students will be able to hear the rhythm and flow of how successful readers "tell" a story. Listening to stories read out loud is one of the foundations to literacy and English language acquisition for non-native English speakers. I plan to use these portable cd players daily to help support my Language Arts curriculum. I believe wholeheartedly that my students can make incredible academic gains by using these individual listening stations.
