Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Success in middle school is near impossible with first and second grade reading levels. This is the reality faced by many of my students, thus making middle school difficult and disheartening. A listening center would bring my struggling readers closer to their reading goals!

My students are brilliant, inquisitive, beautiful 6th graders.

Transitioning to middle school is intimidating for them. They are quickly exposed to an unstable, and often violent, environment in the hallways. The volatility of our school makes learning difficult, and I try my best to create a safe space of exploration and discovery within the walls of my humanities classroom. Unfortunately, most of my students enter 6th grade far below a 6th grade reading level, instead averaging at about 3rd or 4th grade. This makes many learning experiences daunting, and even unreachable. If this gap in reading level remains untouched in middle school, it will likely widen through high school. Unfortunately, my classroom does not provide low-level readers with the resources they need to improve upon their reading, and ultimately grow to be on grade-level. A listening center (paired with more low-level, high interest books) will give my struggling readers an opportunity to improve their reading.

My Project

Literature circles or whole class novels in my classroom are hard to execute with reading levels ranging from 1st to 7th grade in one classroom. The help needed by my lowest-level readers can make it impossible for me to circulate, and often they benefit the least. Having a listening center station that my students could rotate through during reading, would mean my low-level students could listen along with books, or that my high-level students could do the same while I deliver explicit instruction to my low-level readers. Literacy is the necessary foundation for a successful experience in school. Through use of the listening center, my students will be able to interact with their reading in a new, exciting way, as well as practice the fluency they need to become the great readers I know they can be.

Contributing to this project will increase literacy in my classroom.

Each student in my classroom has a goal of 2 years reading growth--for my students on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade reading levels, meeting this goal puts them within reach of an academic success that they have long been unable to experience.
