Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The boys and girls in my 2nd grade class are so inquisitive and eager to learn! They come into class each morning with smiles on their faces, excited to find out what the day will bring! Many of my students come from homes where experiences and opportunities are limited, so they thrive on the discoveries they make in class, whether it is through hands-on science activities, books, structured free play, or trying new foods that they've read about in a story. I teach with the belief that all my students are capable and can grow to be successful, despite the disadvantages they may face. I love the fact they are like little sponges, soaking up everything in the classroom around them, from the praying mantis who visited our window one sunny morning, to the patterns the floor tiles make!
My Project
My students LOVE to read and have books read to them. A listening center would be the perfect addition to our literary stations. What could be better than curling up with a special reading buddy (one of our stuffed animals!) and listening to a story! Many of my students are English Language Learners, so being in a classroom where they are emersed in print and language is very important in their transition to the English language. A listening center is very important, as it models fluent reading, introduces new vocabulary and helps students decode unfamiliar words. Students are also able to read along to books above their reading level, ones that they ordinarily would not be able to read.
