Listen, Learn, Love! Audio to Help ESL Learners

My students need wireless headphones and a capable media system for our listening center of engaging literature.

My Students

Recall a time when your brain felt muddled and your words only stumbled out. A feeling of helplessness likely nettled your side, but still you trudged on.

Each day my ESL students make the brave effort of sharing and expressing themselves in English, but find the roadblocks of speaking a new language obscure their way.

Coming from a range of cultural backgrounds and immigrant experiences, primarily Spanish, Chinese, Korean, and Arabic-speaking, my students are fun, multi-faceted young teens. In our large urban middle school, however, they can feel lost and lonely at first without familiar linguistic and cultural support. Beyond the school walls as well, the challenges that often face working class, recently immigrated families mean most of my students have little access to extend their English language learning outside of school due to limited finances.

My Project

I'd like to transform part of my classroom space into a listening center that has the necessary materials to engage students in related lesson activities and the tools to help them self-direct their learning. This center can be an attractive activity space for students during group work or choice sessions, but also serve as a critical reference space for beginning and advanced language learners alike, where they can rewind a lesson text's audio as a review or challenge themselves with supplemental materials. More simply, however, this can also be a quiet space for individuals to find precious focus with the aid of the headphones.

The possibilities of what my students can learn from one other and ways they can enrich our school community are limitless, as long as they have a safe space to grow their confidence in English.

They can then make better sense of the content in their other classes and start to feel more at home in their new school. This is what I hope to cultivate in my classroom and what your donation can help accomplish.
