My Young Fives classroom at our elementary school is a place where those who are too young or socially/emotionally not ready for Kindergarten thrive. Students are given the opportunity to develop social skills, learn through play, and get exposure to Kindergarten standards. I have eighteen students in my classroom, including one ELL student and one IEP.
Young Fives students possess an advantage academically and socially when they start Kindergarten.
Our elementary is part of Gull Lake Community Schools, a rural school district in Kalamazoo County, MI.
My Project
My students need a CD player, headphones, and an audio splitter to create a Listening Center in the classroom. Students will use an audio Phonemic Awareness program to complete activities that teach rhyming, blending, phoneme deletion, phoneme segmentation, and more. Students will use book bins to store their collection of books from Guided Reading groups and the classroom library.
The Phonemic Awareness skills gained from our Listening Center are vital components to furthering students' ability to stretch and sound out words.
It is my goal that students develop a greater love for reading by having their own treasury of books in their book bins. Through acquisition of these skills, students will be prepared for literary success in Kindergarten!
