I am in my first year of teaching Young Fives at Kellogg Elementary. I consider it a great privilege to work in a district that provides a Young Fives program. Young Fives is a Pre-K grade level consisting mostly of students whose birthdays are past the Kindergarten cut-off date or are socially/emotionally not ready for Kindergarten. This grade level provides an opportunity to introduce the structure of a full-day school environment, exposure to Kindergarten standards, and heavy emphasis on building social skills. Students will identify all of their letters, letter sounds, numbers 1-20, count to 50, add and subtract, read and write sight words, and much more by the end of the school year. Students are also given opportunities to learn through play. Young Fives students are academically and socially equipped to be successful in Kindergarten.
