Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My thirty two 2nd grade students speak six different languages at home. They come from a variety of cultures and bring many different experiences to school. Our overcrowded school offers free breakfast and lunch to our students. Despite these challenges, I have some very bright boys and girls in my class as well as students that are still struggling to learn to read.
All abilities learn and grow in my classroom.
I feel it is my role to support all students reach their potential. That is why I feel the need to have many resources available to these students.
My Project
Chapter books on CD and a child friendly CD player accessible to my students will allow them to hear great literature while I am working with other students. The books on CD I chose offer a range of subject areas. Magic Tree House titles are great for Science and Social Studies vocabulary. These books are in my library and are chosen very often.
Having high interest chapter books on CD as well as book form will give every student the opportunity to enjoy them.
This will also encourage my lower readers to try to challenge themselves and read chapter books. Listening to the many Junie B Jones books and imagining what the characters look like by hearing the descriptive language will help my students use their imagination. Being able to discuss their illustrations and write about them will help them learn English in an authentic settling.
