My classroom is one of 5 second grades. Each room has between 28 and 32 students. Our school serves pre-K through 8th grade. At last count we were near 1,500 students. We are located on the south side of Chicago. The neighborhood has gone through many changes. Now, it is predominantly Hispanic with many other cultures represented. Almost all students come from low income homes. Families in our community use the school as a point of information for many resources. We offer YMCA after school as well as ESL and technology resources for families. I have some students reading above grade level as well as some reading 2 years below. I usually have 20-25 percent diverse learners in my classroom. I love the mix the mix of cultures, abilities and personalities although it can be tricky at times.
