Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember when you listened to a story? Did the story teller make sound effects or sing songs? Many books on tape have interesting sound effects, music, and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children. My students need to listen to books on CD.
This coming school year, I will teach students in a second grade inclusion class.
The student population will include students with special needs as well as English Language Learners. My students' reading levels range from Pre K through 3rd grade. Unfortunately, the resources are limited. My goal is to have all of my students increase significantly and be able to function and read independently by the end of the year.
My Project
Listening to a book read on CD helps children see how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. It helps focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Audiobooks also give an important introduction to listening, a skill that a student must master in order to learn to read. I am requesting a listening center and sets of books with CD for individual student use as well as small groups. Students listen and follow along as the CD reads the book word for word, building enthusiasm for reading with every page!
My students will benefit from having books on CD.
This can provide a wonderful opportunity for children to hear their favorite books read aloud again and again. The more they listen, the greater the likelihood that they will learn new vocabulary words.
