I do my very best to provide my students with all the opportunities of big city budgets! With the help of programs like DonorsChoose, we can work together to bridge the divide.
In areas such as the one I teach, there are many days when the only books kids will hear are the books read in the classroom. By choosing to support my project and opening up the world of books to first graders, you are helping to cultivate a generation of literacy rich individuals. Together we can light the spark of reading!
My Project
I have requested a listening center, Dr. Seuss read along books, and a Martin Luther King, Jr. CD and book set. We are currently missing out on listening to audiobooks of recent literature because our listening center is a rectangular one tape deck cassette player where the children two at a time can listen to some of the old books on cassette tape. New audiobooks from recent literature are only on CD's, and not on cassettes!
With your help, eight children can listen to both books on tape and on CD at our new listening station! The quality literature kids can access just by being able to listen to CD's will almost triple!
By listening to books like Dr. Seuss on CD, my students will hear how the author plays with words, gets silly, and how much fun literacy can be! This adventure in fluency can lead to social studies curriculum connections as well.
It's always best practice to integrate other areas of study into as many parts of the day as can happen. That is why I also requested some Non-Fiction Martin Luther King, Jr. texts and CD in my package as well. Who knows? Some historians and authors just may be born with your generous donation! There are so many children who have such difficulty reading and get so tangled accessing the text that they get turned off to books. With a listening station we can take that struggle out of the equations and watch the joy of listening to books take over. We want kids to read to learn, but we must also provide opportunities where they are learning through enjoyment! Together we can light the spark of reading!
