Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students each have a unique story and culture that they bring to my classroom. Some travel each Christmas to Mexico to see there families, others discuss their recent trip to Disneyland, and even more stare in wonder at the trips their classmates have taken. If there were one word that sums up my classroom it would have to be diverse. From the most privileged, to the least, my classroom truly embodies a cross-cultural community. It is this diversity that leads to a profound sense of community. Each learner is eager to share their experiences with their friends and quick to listen to others. Every year I marvel as my students listen with open hearts and minds to their fellow learners and, at the end of the day, take what they have learned back to their families. As a blended learning school, this sense of community permits the development of well rounded, culturally aware, and competent students.
My Project
One of the most essential aspects of my classroom is big rug in the center. This is the rug where we gather in the morning and welcome each of our friends. It is also the place where we read aloud. From Pete the Cat’s New Shoes to Charlotte’s Web, read aloud develops vocabulary, imagination, and the desire to read and learn. As such, programs like Wonders allows my students to have books read aloud to them, while I work with small groups.
Headphones are essential in order to allow both independent read aloud and targeted instruction to occur.
With the headphones, students are able to use classroom Chromebook’s and select a book they would like to read and listen to, as well as follow along with their own book. Without enough headphones for my students, it becomes a never ending game of musical chairs to ensure each student has a book read to them, participates in small group targeted instruction, and has time to explore and read quietly to themselves. With more headphones, comes the opportunity for students to have more opportunity to explore reading and develop their literacy skills.
