One of the most essential aspects of my classroom is big rug in the center. This is the rug where we gather in the morning and welcome each of our friends. It is also the place where we read aloud. From Pete the Cat’s New Shoes to Charlotte’s Web, read aloud develops vocabulary, imagination, and the desire to read and learn. As such, programs like Wonders allows my students to have books read aloud to them, while I work with small groups. Headphones are essential in order to allow both independent read aloud and targeted instruction to occur. With the headphones, students are able to use classroom Chromebook’s and select a book they would like to read and listen to, as well as follow along with their own book. Without enough headphones for my students, it becomes a never ending game of musical chairs to ensure each student has a book read to them, participates in small group targeted instruction, and has time to explore and read quietly to themselves. With more headphones, comes the opportunity for students to have more opportunity to explore reading and develop their literacy skills.
