My students are struggling readers in a small, rural community. About 50 percent of the children in our school are from low-income families. I serve 40 students each day in our reading intervention program. These students mainly come from kindergarten through third grade.
My students need read-along books and the equipment for listening to them so that they can build their reading fluency.
Listening to good examples of fluent reading while they follow along will help them to improve their rate, fluidity, and expression.
My Project
Many times, the regular materials I use as a reading specialist run out before my students are on a solid enough footing to discontinue interventions. Although they may have progressed to the point where they can read grade-level books, these students often need more practice to become fluent.
Listening to and reading favorite stories with read-along books and CDs will make fluency practice fun and engaging in my intervention groups.
Using headphones, the students will be able to clearly hear the stories being read while they follow along. These materials will be just what my students need to boost their rate and will give them a good model to follow as they learn to improve the smoothness and expressiveness of their reading.
