This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I wish you could meet my students. They will amaze you with their tenacity. I call them all GATE which stands for "Great Attitude Towards Education" rather than the traditional "gifted and talented education."
Daily, I have the opportunities to show my students that possibilities are limitless as I encourage them to dream big and then, bigger.
Dreaming must not stop!
We are a history class which feels like theatre, choir, acting, modeling, oratory, and dance. We use so many modalities to push the boundaries of knowledge and to showcase their academic abilities. I love that my students realize that they are teachers, too.
My Project
As a 7th-grade world history teacher, I frequently discuss the ways in which China intersects with both Africa and the Middle East. My students continue to astound me with thought-provoking questions about the three regions. They leave me saying, "Oh my."
China is in the news daily.
Students are hungry for information about the region. The week-long seminar, at Georgetown University through the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, will give me daily opportunities to explore those "oh mys." Our state standards cover these three regions and I am excited about developing a fuller, more relevant curriculum for my inquisitive students as I receive top-notch lectures from professors and scholars.
