My Students

Have you ever been walking in the woods and heard a branch break behind you? Or have you seen tracks on the ground that you could not identify? Would you like to know what made that branch break or left those tracks? We want to know too!

We are very fortunate to have a nature trail on our school grounds.

We use our nature trail for science lessons and to learn to appreciate our environment. We have a learning deck, built as part of an Eagle Scout project, a learning circle, and a butterfly garden as part of our nature trail. We have seen evidence of animals on our trail and we would like to be able to identify those animals!

My Project

Having a Bushnell Trophy Cam on our nature trail will give us the opportunity to spy on the wildlife. My students have tried really hard to sit quietly and listen for animals… that lasts for about 2 minutes! We’ve seen birds, lizards, snakes, and insects on our trail, but we haven’t seen the big animals. We know they are there. When the students have gone home and the school grounds are quiet, we (teachers) have seen deer, turkey and a fox on the school campus. The Bushnell Trophy Cam will enable us to see those animals that are more secretive. I would like my students to begin keeping track of the animals we see. We will be able to use this information year to year to conduct population studies of the animals found on our nature trail. My students will be able to become citizen scientists and use the skills they learn in science in a real world application.
