Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This school year, a select group of our students will be participating in the High School Varsity Reading Decathlon (formerly known as "Battle of the Books").

I'd love to provide these students, who are volunteering their time and efforts to participate in the HS Varsity Reading Decathlon their own personal copy of each book chosen for this competition.

Our immigrant and first generation students come from disadvantaged backgrounds where book collection is considered a luxury. For those students who are avid readers and are opting into this program and bringing their positive energy and enthusiasm to it, I would love to be able to provide them with their own copy of each book, to keep.

The excitement I witness every time I give away a brand-new book is priceless and for students who count reading as one of their pleasures, this is the greatest thing I can do for them.

By participating in the HS Varsity Reading Decathlon, these students are also earning community service hours as they are part of a district-wide program that involves schools from communities all around the city.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
