This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in our special day preschool class consist of children ages 3 to 5 years old, with moderate to severe disabilities, which include but are not limited to: Autism, Intellectual Disability, Down Syndrome, Speech impairment and other health impairments.

Our students have deficits in language and communication, sensory sensitivities and developmental delays.

Their “Nature Classroom” offers opportunities for expanding language, meeting sensory needs and fostering relationships. This classroom also houses the schools mild to moderate special day preschool class which allows the materials to reach beyond one class.

My Project

Our classroom has over 16 large florescent lights, the cozy sheets light softener creates a neutral environment for students with sensory differences. Children with Autism and other health impairments often feel distracted and overstimulated by the fluorescent light. We usually have to turn the lights off and work in dim lighting.

The cozy sheets light softener will allow us to work in soft lighting and keep the focus on learning.

With students less focused on bright lights we can better prepare them for kindergarten and give them the tools to minimize self-stimulating behavior they exhibit when their classroom lighting becomes too much.
