My students need novels to see that historical figures have overcome the most challenging odds to assist and better not only their communities but the world.
What I love about my students is their ongoing drive to succeed, despite the odds that they are up against. We are there for the struggling students, ones that are determined to get their education against all odds. That spirit and drive is what makes me proud to go to work each and every morning.
There is so much that is challenging in life, as a whole, but when faced with challenges in life as well as academics, we have to admire the students that stand up and face the day to make sure they succeed.
That's my kids, the ones that want to make it. The fighters. I want to create a place where they don't have to fight, but instead can have a slice of "normal."
My Project
Faced with adversity and challenges that most students don't face, my students need to see that even the direst of situations can lead to the world being changed. These books will allow those students to see that the situation of one's birth does not dictate their future.
Malala was a poor Pakistani girl that stood up for education and was almost murdered for it.
She stood up to the Taliban and continues to fight for the rights of education, being the youngest person in history to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. One child faces true evil and rose above, I cannot think of another story so inspirational and heartening to give students.
Hidden Figures states that what society thinks, you can change the face of history forever and unimaginable ways. My kids have told me that they do not think a "screw up" can make a difference. I want to show them that yes they can. As so many others before them had.
