I am employed at a high risk, low funding Alternative school, this is my first year starting out at the beginning of the school year and it is important to make my classroom feel not only welcoming but adaptive to the diverse needs of my students. By utilizing alternative seating, varied book selections, and providing for them in ways that they would not expect I hope to teach the whole child and not just the curricula. Alternative seating allows for excess energy to be expend in a healthy nondisruptive way. The whiteboards allow for the students to keep active notes and engage in a simple but effective way during class time. The book selections span the gamut between literature to informational and nonfiction, allowing for growth and exploration in recent releases that can be identified with and enjoyed as a whole. Despite the small class size, I feel that the setting allows for students to be engaged if given the opportunity to fully link in and anchor their education with their lives. But that takes an engaged teacher and relevant resources.
