My 2nd and 3rd grade students are from a high-poverty school in the rural mid-west. I have numerous students in my classroom, including students with special needs, English language/culture learners, and deaf/heard of hearing students. Most students are the sons and daughters of hard working farmers.
Recently, I borrowed a camcorder from another school district. When I brought the camcorder to class and incorporated it in our lessons for a week--you should have seen the students burst with excitement. It is amazing how one little item could transform the learning process for so many students! We used the camera to create several projects: digital storytelling, student directed weather reports, skits, and character images from the chapter book that we are reading. Almost instantly, I could see the students' comprehension and retention of skills increase; the students showed motivation unlike anything that I have ever seen; and attendance even improved. My students were heartbroken when we had to return the camera after only one week.
My students would be thrilled if you could help us out in any way possible. The purchase of a camcorder/camera would allow my students to be deeply engaged in hands-on learning. The cross-curricular possibilities are endless: incorporating video into reading and writing assignments, using video to present information in a bi-lingual fashion (English, Spanish, and American Sign Language), video journaling, creating newscasts and weather reports, incorporating video into other computer applications, and more.
Studies show that incorporating video and images into the classroom will result in a greater degree of student learning, will provide authentic assessment, and will motivate reluctant learners.
With your gracious donations, you can ignite the fire for learning in countless children each year. You will enable many children--farmers daughters & sons, English language learners, and the deaf/heard of hearing to develop knowledge that is useful in the classroom and in life. Thank you for your consideration.
